THE name of Andy Whitworth is synonymous with a string of titles at the highest levels of Calderdale golf.
But the 10 times Union champion is also proud of another lesser known feat, that of appearing on the 'Rabbits' honours board at his home club Bradley Hall.
The term 'Rabbits' is almost unique to the Yorkshire area, and refers to golfers with handicaps between 16 and 28. Those of lower handicap are labelled 'Tigers.'
The first Rabbit match was held between Harrogate Oakdale and Knaresborough on September 22, 1922 and the phenomenon of rabbits golf has grown since then.
The West Riding Rabbit Golf association was formed in 1939 and in 1955 this was changed to the Yorkshire Rabbits Golf Association, which currently has 103 member clubs divided in to six regions, of which local clubs are represented by the Halifax, Huddersfield & District Rabbits Golf Association.
Whitworth's home club Bradley Hall is currently competition co-ordinator for the local association.
Each year, the Rabbit Captain is entitled to a seat on the board, so can influence decisions in the interests of Rabbit members. There is a programme of events for the higher handicap members which gives new members the opportunity to overcome the sometimes daunting proposition of joining a club.
The programme has new members evenings twice a year, in April and September, where they join committee members in a short round of golf followed by an informal social evening where club activities particularly for Rabbit golfers are explained.
Events are held throughout the year, including the popular Rabbit friendlies, which allow members to meet and play those of similar standard on other courses, while for the more competitive, there are inter club competitions run by the District Association and in particular the Rabbits League, in which Bradley Hall has gained two promotions in three years. They currently sit at the top of Section B.
Bradley Hall also hold competitions exclusively for Rabbit golfers including the Rabbits Trophy, Buck Rabbits Trophy, Rabbits Knock Out, Rabbits Shield, Chinchilla Cup and Rabbit Golfer of the Year.
Winner's names, like Whitworth's, are forever immortalised on the honours boards on the clubhouse walls.
Rabbits Captain's Day is one of the highlights of the year and while aimed at Rabbit golfers, it is open to all.
At this year's competition, Rabbit Captain Mick Moss presented prizes the best Tiger prize to Gordon Denham, lowest gross prize to Andy Shaw, mixed greensomes award to Phil Wilkinson and Margaret Helliwell and best junior trophy to Ben Ward.
Shaun Lang won the Rabbits Captain's Cup with Peter Broadley the runner up.
One of the major fund raising activities is the Rabbits Open which this year will be on Sunday, September 7. The competition, which has £1,000 plus worth of prizes, has recently been extended to golfers with handicaps of 10 to 15.
The section has raised £5,000 for the club over the past three years, helping purchase, among other things, of a new information board by the first tee.
Anyone new to golf or with a handicap in the 16-28 range who wishes to find out more about rabbits golf and Bradley Hall should call Mick Moss on 01422 835363.
Membership is available in all sections of the club - further information from membership secretary Pete Olson on 01422 311130.
