HALIFAX under 16 boys team performed well in their first Yorkshire League matches of the season at Hull's KC Stadium complex.
The first game was against Bradford and Halifax started well with George Moss, Mark Holmes and Oliver James controlling the midfield and James Smith and Ryan Dransfield very lively upfront.
Centre forward Jake Gledhill opened the scoring after a g
ood flowing movement involving several Halifax players.
Bradford mounted a few counter attacks but Henry Shelton and Craig McDonald marshalled the defence brilliantly and goalkeeper Matthew Breton was rarely troubled.
After further Halifax pressure, Moss fired in a bullet of a strike to make it 2-0, following up after shots from Dransfield and Gledhill had been blocked.
The second game against Driffield saw Halifax carry on their fine form and it was not long before they opened the scoring with Gledhill slotting the ball home from close range after a shot from Mark Holmes was deflected.
Halifax made it 2-0 when a superb move, starting deep in defence and involving eight passes, ended with James Smith placing the ball neatly past the Driffield keeper.
Dransfield completed a convincing win when he popped up at the far post to flick the ball past a stranded keeper from a tight angle.
The third game against York was always going to be a hard match for the tiring team against one of the strongest sides in the county - and so it proved.
It was not a completely one-sided game and both Moss and Smith created half chances but the skilful and quick York forwards always threatened and despite good work from Matthew Ward on his debut, Peter Laker and a superb performance from keeper Breton, York scored three unanswered goals to run out worthy winners.
THE new Halifax under 16 Girls team played their first of six Yorkshire League tournaments at home and came up against three of the stronger teams in the league.
However, they performed very well in all the games and only lost the third match after a great battle with last year's champions Wakefield.
