WING man Andy Smith's contract with Fax has been terminated with immediate effect.
And though club officials are disappointed to lose the former Bradford and Harlequins man, they are taking a positive viewpoint and are confident there is enough strength in depth in the squad to absorb the loss.
"Following an internal disciplinary procedure which will remain confidential between the club and the player, Andy Smith has had his contract terminated," said Fax chief executive Graham Clay.
Wakefield born Smith, who celebrates his 24th birthday on Sunday, came to The Shay on a one year contract last October.
In the early part of this season, he produced some scorching displays which had the pundits rating him among the most feared wide men in the National League.
However, his form levelled off in later weeks and Smith reacted badly after being substituted in Fax's surprise reverse against Sheffield Eagles at the Don Valley Stadium at the end of May.
He did not reappear on the bench to make himself available for a possible second half interchange and since that game has not been in contact with the club despite repeated attempts by officials to reach him.
That process culminated yesterday with his departure, but Clay said the matter was at its conclusion and Fax were now looking ahead with relish to next week's televised clash with Leigh Centurions.
"Martin Hall and Matt Calland have assembled a great squad which remains strong in that wing department," said the Fax chief. "We are scoring points for fun at the moment and we are optmistic we can carry on our good run against Leigh."
However, Clay said with the announcement over Super League franchises looming, it was vitally important the public of Halifax responded and turned up in their numbers next Thursday in front of the Sky cameras.
"I cannot stress how vital this game is, not only in giving us the chance to show how we have progressed on the field, but also in the opportunity for the public of Calderdale to turn up in numbers," he said.
"We have the best Fax team in years, so let's hope we get a big crowd as some of our rivals have recently to show the viewers and everyone else that we are worthy of a Super League licence."
HALIFAX under 21s are in action tonight when they host Featherstone at the Shay (7.30).
